A great day at the patch with a london record count of sandwich terns today 60+ and also 150+ Common terns also upriver.
 Good numbers of terns seen at Tilbury this am including single ROSEATE plus COMMON, LT, SANDWICH and ARCTICS (per P. Larkin) #essexbirding

LONDON ROSEFINCH

  • Walthamstow Marshes: m COMMON ROSEFINCH c1900-21:15 at least singing & showing Park at Lea Bridge Rd riding school E10 7QL. Walk North along concrete track on the West side of the paddocks, view from the North side of the railway bridge looking to the area to the South-east. This is an inaccessible piece of scrub but bird does perch up when singing. Now it's opposite Anchor & Hope pub and at railway underpass. Rosefinch    Still present today the 8th. Yet another london lifer today with SPOTTED SANDPIPER putting me on (278).

Trust me the bird is on the right standing on a tern raft. Spotted Sandpiper
Spotted sandpiper London records: 
  • pre-1852: Brent Reservoir (Middx), one shot on an unknown date (Harting, 1866)
  • 1956: Hilfield Park Reservoir (Herts), one on September 2nd (LBR 56, Hardwick & Self)
  • 1988: Barn Elms Reservoir (Surrey), a summer plumaged bird on May 16th (LBR 56, Hardwick & Self)
  • 1989: King George V Reservoir (Essex), one from September 25th to October 6th (LBR 56, Hardwick & Self)

The specimen of the first record was among a collection sold in April 1852 and purchased by Frederick Bond "who traced it to the person who had received it in the flesh and stuffed it and fully satisfied himself of the truth of the statement" (Harting, 1866). The specimen is now in the British Museum.

Gallions Reach: My raptor list this spring: 2 OSPREY, 4 RED KITE, 4 HOBBY, 40+ BUZZARD and also i had a new bird for the site GREAT WHITE EGRET.And only the second record of CUCKOO.
